ASBESTOS

Asbestos is made up of six naturally occurring silicate minerals (amosite, chrysotile, crocidolite, and the fibrous varieties of tremolite, actinolite, and anthophylite). These asbestos minerals consist of thin, separable fibers arranged parallel to one another. Because they are strong, have the ability to be woven, and are resistant to heat and most chemicals, asbestos fibers were commonly used in manufactured goods such as roofing, insulation, textiles, and transmission parts before their risks were discovered.

The inhalation of asbestos is very hazardous and causes diseases such as lung cancer and mesothelioma. All new uses of asbestos have been banned in the United States by the EPA.
