MESOTHELIOMA

Mesothelioma Cancer

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer found in the membrane of the lung, chest, abdomen, and/or heart depending on its phase. Its only known cause is exposure to asbestos. Symptoms may not appear until 20 to 50 years after inhalation, but once diagnosed, most cases are fatal within two years.

Traditional treatment options for mesothelioma include surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. However, presently more and more experimental routes are being pursued, such as gene therapy. Many patients have been turning to clinical trials to help find a cure.

Types of Mesothelioma

Pleural Mesothelioma is the most common type of mesothelioma responsible for almost 3/4 of the cases diagnosed. It develops in the lining of the lungs, called the pleura.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma develops in the lining of the abdomen and tends to affect the stomach and intestines. Symptoms may include stomach pain, weight loss, nausea, and/or abdominal swelling.

Pericardial Mesothelioma is the least common type of mesothelioma. It develops in the lining of the heart, called the pericardium. Symptoms may include shortness of breath, chest pain, heart palpitations, and/or coughing.
