PERICARDIAL MESOTHELIOMA

Accounting for less than 10% of all mesothelioma cases, pericardial mesothelioma is the rarest form. It affects the pericardium, which is the membrane layer that surrounds the heart. When the asbestos particles pierce the pericardium, they cause irritation which leads to the development of cancerous tumors. Doctors have yet to discover how the fibers originally reach the heart.

The fluid created as a result of the tumors manifests in symptoms of chest pain, irregular heartbeat, and other heart-related problems. Chest x-rays and CT or MRI scans may be used to help diagnosis the disease, but a biopsy must be performed for confirmation. A confirmed diagnosis is extremely serious as 95% of malignant pericardial mesothelioma cases are fatal within two years.
